Model United Nations (MUN)

KAS has a very dynamic MUN club that has become an integral part of the bustling MUN conference circuit in Kuwait.

Participating in an MUN conference is a huge challenge that takes its toll on every delegate, but the benefits defy quantification. To make the most of the experience, students have to sacrifice time, energy and comfort as they research their topics and participate in lengthy conference sessions.

The Model United Nations (MUN) refers to a global network of conferences for schools and university students, organized by students for students. These conferences are generally accurate simulations of the activities of the real United Nations (UN); complete with dress code and ambassadorial comportment. The conferences are not only organized by students, but their every aspect is also run by them. This peer-based feature of MUN is one of its strongest attractions as we can never overestimate the inspiration that a student can draw from seeing and hearing a peer excelling in such a high-level environment. Many decide on the spot to reach higher than they ever imagined possible. When the impossible begins to look attractive, greatness is born.

The MUN Club at the Kuwait American School (KASMUN), provides a valuable platform for students to develop essential life skills, broaden their horizons, and explore potential career paths in politics, international relations, diplomacy, and governance at all levels. It promotes a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the world we live in and the importance of cooperation and diplomacy in addressing pressing global challenges. Students learn that they have a role to play in making the world a better place.

LEADERSHIP, MEMBERSHIP AND CONFERENCES

The club is led by a strong student Executive Committee, which is led by the Secretary-General and two Deputy Secretaries-General.

Club members have to comply with strict criteria throughout the year and attend a minimum of three conferences in Kuwait for the year.

In 2023-2024 KAS students participated in a total of 7 local conferences and one international conference in Qatar. Many of our students regularly win prestigious awards at the conferences they attend.

BOOK PUBLISHED BY KASMUN

KASMUN has published a book titled, Model United Nations (MUN), Preparation With Authentic Student Writings, in September 2024. This book is based on the authentic writings of our students as they prepared for the Conference at the American University of Dubai in 2023.

The preparations they made for the conference were of such a high standard, that a decision was made to not lose their valuable and insightful work, but to save it for posterity. This book is not meant to sit on shelves, but to be used as an important resource for preparing other students for future MUN conferences. It is a public record, a case study, and a training manual woven into one, and it covers a rich diversity of current and recent global topics. Students from around the globe can benefit immensely from the plentiful position papers, opening speeches, and resolutions show-cased in this publication. A further reason for bringing this book into the light of public scrutiny, is the personal reflections by students who attended the conference. Their heartfelt comments can guide many who are interested in participating in MUN conferences. The publishing of this book is first and foremost an appreciation and celebration of the amazing students of the Kuwait American School, but it is also a testament to the inspirational and uplifting energy of MUN.

You may purchase the book through the school library.
